Two days before the “final” of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against Spain, there is unrest in the camp of the German national team. In the team, after the initial debacle against Japan, there should also be doubts about the national team coach Hans Flick. The latter, in turn, is probably following a contingency plan with the Bayern star.
In the German national football team, things are creaking. A 1-2 draw against Japan at the start of the World Cup was tantamount to a sporting oath of exposure. Up front, the DFB stars let a number of their best chances go unscathed. The not-so-solid defense at the back was worryingly wobbly, especially in the second round.
The national team coach Hansi Flick also had to endure criticism, who during his tenure was mostly showered with praise despite many mixed performances.
“I didn’t understand some things about the formation against Japan. The national team coach Hansi Flick is my friend, I stand behind him 100 percent. But you can be honest between friends, you even have to be: he coached himself against Japan,” wrote record international Lothar Matthäus in his section “Bild”.
“Change of harmony” in favor of the Bayern star?
In particular, the 67th minute substitution of strong paceman and goalscorer Ilkay Gündogan for Leon Goretzka at 1-0 angered many observers. This completely changed the statics in the German team.
The line was lost, by Japan’s goals, of all things, to two Bundesliga legionnaires Ritsu Doan (75th) and Takuma Asano (83rd) and gave the DFB selection a nightmare start to the tournament.
According to “Bild”, this change is viewed critically even within the team. There is a “misunderstanding”, writes the tabloid, there is talk of a “harmonious change” in favor of Goretzkas, who surprisingly did not make it into the starting line-up.
Faced with the question of whether Flick was too nice, Kai Havertz had clear words on the PK on Friday. He is not someone the coach needs to shout at, the claim circulating in the press is simply “totally wrong”.
World Cup: This is Hansi Flick’s emergency plan with Joshua Kimmich
To turn things around against Spain on Sunday (20:00), Joshua Kimmich’s backup engine has now even been moved to right-back, which Niklas Süle did poorly against Japan.
“Every person, every position” will be discussed, Flick confirmed Thursday during the media round when asked about it.
According to “Bild”, the FC Bayern coach and professional have already made a possible role change together as a contingency plan before the World Cup. This could now come into play against Spain.
